Headline: Man suspected of fraud with apartments was detained by police in Tatarstan
“Policemen of the Administration for Economic Security and Combating the Corruption of the Russian MIA Administration for the Republic of Tatarstan detained a resident of Kazan suspected of a fraud under the guise of providing assistance in purchase of apartments for veterans of the Great Patriotic War,” said Russian MIA official representative Irina Volk.
In the course of the investigation and search measures, the police found that the 38-year old resident of Kazan had offered assistance in getting subsidized housing for participants of the Great Patriotic War. The suspect told the victims that he had wide connections and could help them to get housing due to veterans.
According to the information obtained by the police, the suspect learnt that an 88-year old resident of Kazan – veteran of the Great Patriotic War was eligible for housing. After a while, he informed the old woman’s relative that he could purchase an apartment for a certain remuneration. The malefactor got 1,600,000 rubles from the veteran’s relative.
When they met four months later, the suspect explained that he had allegedly handed over the obtained money to officials for positive settlement of that issue.
When the suspect obtained another 22,000 rubles from the victim, he was detained red-handed by policemen of the Administration for Economic Security and Combating the Corruption of the Russian MIA for the Republic of Tatarstan.
The General Investigation Administration of the Russian MIA for the Republic of Tatarstan initiated a criminal case against the suspect based on essential elements of a crime stipulated by Part 4 Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Fraud”. The maximum punishment established by this article – imprisonment for up to ten years with a fine of up to 1,000,000 rubles.
