Ralph Büchi, 59, President Axel Springer International, is switching from Axel Springer to the Ringier Group effective June 1, 2017. As COO and deputy to CEO Marc Walder, Büchi will provide reinforcement for the Group Executive Board. Büchi will remain Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ringier Axel Springer Media AG, the joint venture between Ringier and Axel Springer in Central and Eastern Europe.
“Axel Springer and Ralph Büchi are bound by 18 years of close, trusting and thoroughly successful collaboration,” said Dr. Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer SE. “As Publishing Manager he always remained a journalist, and as an employed manager he was always an entrepreneur as well. In his various functions and positions at Axel Springer he managed to combine these three skills in an outstanding way. He made it possible for us to enter the Swiss market and with the 2007 purchase of Jean Frey Verlag made Axel Springer a relevant player there. This became the foundation for the current wide-reaching cooperation with the Ringier Group in Switzerland and in Eastern Europe. Ralph Büchi is Swiss at heart but also international through and through. A large part of the credit for the rapid and successful internationalization of Axel Springer SE in recent years goes to Ralph Büchi. Therefore we are glad that we will continue to work closely with him in his new position.”
Ralph Büchi began his journalistic career in 1978 at the HANDELSZEITUNG, Switzerland’s largest business newspaper. Later he became CEO of Handelszeitung und Finanzrundschau AG in Zurich. In 1999 Büchi sold a majority share in the company to Axel Springer. Following the merger of the Handelszeitung publishing group and Jean Frey AG, as well as further acquisitions in the program guide and online field, he became CEO and delegate of the Board of Directors of Axel Springer Schweiz. In January 2008 he additionally took on the function of President Axel Springer International and in July 2010 the function of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the joint venture Ringier Axel Springer Media AG. From 2012 until 2014 Büchi was a Member of the Axel Springer SE Executive Board, responsible for the International division. In addition to his function as President Axel Springer International, he has been delegate of the Board of Directors of Ringier Axel Springer Schweiz AG since 2016. Büchi’s position as President International at Axel Springer will not be filled. In the future his remit will be coordinated within the Board division of Paid Models.
