Headline: Foreign Ministry of Belarus hosts briefing dedicated to the UN Day
On October 24, 2017 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus hosted a briefing dedicated to the UN Day and the 25th Anniversary of the signing of the Agreement between the Republic of Belarus and the United Nations on the establishment of the UN Office in Minsk.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the UN Office in the Republic of Belarus.
The briefing was attended by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Andrei Dapkiunas, the UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus, Sanaka Samarasinha.
In his statement, A.Dapkiunas highlighted the main milestones of Belarus’ participation in the UN and outlined the approaches and initiatives of Belarus within the UN. In particular, Deputy Foreign Minister recalled that Belarus has launched a global partnership to combat trafficking in human beings and is one of the recognized leaders in this field. A.Dapkiunas also focused on Belarus’ activities in the UN in mobilizing collective efforts to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, as well as in promoting the interests of middle-income countries in sustainable development, promoting multilingualism and intercultural diversity. According to him, the Belarusian initiative to plant at the UN Headquarters in New York in May 2015 (in the year of the 70th Anniversary of the Organization) the Tree of Peace and Unity became a symbol of the unification of all nations.
Representatives of the United Nations in Minsk, Ambassadors of the European Union, Ecuador, UK, Heads of Offices of the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation in Belarus presented landmark events that, in their opinion, most vividly characterize cooperation with Belarus within the framework of joint projects involving the United Nations, outlined the prospects for further development of cooperation.
The event was also addressed by the Dean of the Faculty of International Relations of BSU, whose students attended the event, representatives of non-governmental organizations, private sector.
