Headline: Permanent Representative of Belarus in Geneva Y.Ambrazevich participates in Thematic Consultations on Refugees
On November 14 — 15, 2017, Geneva hosted the fourth and fifth rounds of thematic consultations in the run up to the development of a global compact on refugees.
Background information: A global compact should be developed within the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees with the view to be presented to the UN General Assembly for consideration at its 73rd session in 2018. The relevant mandate was given by the New York Declaration on refugees and migrants adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2016.
On November 15, 2017 the consultations featured a discussion on the root causes behind large movement of refugees, in which the Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations at Geneva, Yury Ambrazevich, delivered a statement.
In his statement the Permanent Representative of Belarus pointed out that more than anything else it had been violation of international law by certain countries that had led to wars and conflicts, which, in turn, triggered large movements of migrants and refugees around the world.
Therefore, there is currently the need for more effective conflict- and war-resolution mechanisms, which, in turn, should help in addressing many of today’s transnational challenges, including the problem posed by refugees. In this regard, the Permanent Representative drew attention to the initiative of the President of Belarus to launch a new peace-making process with the view to forging a new strategic vision for a new type of constructive international relations.
