On July 28, 2018 the delegation of Belarus headed by Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the UN Valentin Rybakov took part in the first in the UN history Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of the UN Member States. The Belarusian delegation also included Pavel Chichko, Secretary of the Interministerial Commission on Countering Extremism and Combating Terrorism under the Auspices of the Security Council of the Republic of Belarus.
The conference was opened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Under-Secretary-General on Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General, Executive Director of UNODC Yuri Fedotov, Executive Director of the Executive Directorate of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee Michèle Coninsx, Secretary-General INTERPOL Jürgen Stock.
During the conference, its participants discussed topical issues of strengthening international cooperation to combat new emerging forms of terrorism, including improving information exchange, combating the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters, engaging young people in the fight against terrorism, and countering misuse of new technologies and the Internet by terrorists.
On the margins of the conference the delegation of Belarus held a meeting with Vladimir Voronkov. The Sides discussed topical aspects of international cooperation in the fight against international terrorism in the context of the adoption by the UN General Assembly on June 26 of a resolution on the review of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. They noted positive interaction between the Belarus mission to the UN and the UN Counter-Terrorism Department, including the holding of a joint thematic event on combating terrorism on the Internet the day before.
V.Rybakov informed the Head of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism on the preparations for the international conference on countering terrorism in cyberspace to be held in Minsk in October.
