“Officers of the MIA of Russia Division for the Sudzhansky District detained a suspect in the theft from the Trinity Church of the icon ‘Ascension of the Lord’ referring to the beginning of the XIX century,” said the official representative of the MIA of Russia Irina Volk.
The theft was reported to the duty-unit at 8:00 in the morning. An immediate response team was sent to the scene. The police suggested that a 48-year-old previously convicted local resident could be involved in the crime. Some time later, a police precinct officer detained the suspect in the city market, where he was going to sell the relic.
The Inquiry Division of the MIA of Russia Division for the Sudzhansky District has initiated a criminal case on the grounds of the crime provided for in Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. With respect to the defendant, the court selected a preventive measure in the form of remand in custody.
“After the examination by cultural experts, the police officers handed over to the church the stolen icon ‘Ascension of the Lord’, having the cultural and historical value,” I. Volk added.
