A welcoming ceremony at Rundale Palace in Pilsrundale, Latvia, started the Polish Presidential Couple’s visit to the country. In Latvia President Andrzej Duda among others attended a so-called Arraiolos meeting of EU state presidents.

President Duda was accompanied in Latvia by First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda.

See also: President underscores energy solidarity at Latvian summit – aide Andrzej Duda aide Krzysztof Szczerski said after the talks that President Duda stressed the need for European solidarity in energy matters, observing that this meant states should not pursue particular interests at the community’s cost. Andrzej Duda also advocated the continuation of Euro-Atlantic ties in military matters.

Attending the meeting alongside Andrzej Duda were the Presidents of Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Germany, Portugal, Slovenia and Italy.

On the meeting’s sidelines Polish President and Austrian state head Alexander Van der Bellen discussed the December COP24 summit in Katowice, southern Poland, and agreed on joint undertakings in preparing the meeting.

Initiated by former Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio, the annual Arraiolos meetings bring together state presidents who do not wield executive powers in their countries. The name stems from the Portuguese city in which the first meeting was held in 2003. (PAP)
