Simcha Rathajzer-Rotem, the last fighter of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, has died

Simcha Rathajzer-Rotem, also known as Kazik – the last surviving fighter of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, member of the Jewish Combat Organisation, has passed away. After Germans suppressed the Uprising in May 1943, he organised help for dozens of fighters whom he led through sewage tunnels outside of the ghetto and then helped in bringing them out of Warsaw.

During that operation he saved, among others, Marek Edelman. He participated in the Warsaw Uprising. After the war in 1946 he left for Palestine. He defended the independence of the State of Israel. He settled down in Jerusalem and always remembered Poland.
