President Andrzej Duda, his wife and foreign diplomats in Poland paid homage to Monday-deceased Gdańsk Mayor Paweł Adamowicz, who died from knife wounds inflicted during a Sunday charity gala in Gdańsk.
At a New Year’s meeting with the foreign diplomatic corps in Warsaw’s Presidential Palace, the presidential couple and foreign guests commemorated Adamowicz with a minute of silence.
“Yesterday (…) Paweł Adamowicz was attacked (…) by a criminal, who stabbed him several times. Unfortunately, medical teams were unable to save him. (…) Adamowicz has died, which has steeped my country in deep sorrow as one of the most tragic incidents in Poland in recent years,” the president said in an address.
On Sunday evening Gdańsk Mayor Paweł Adamowicz was stabbed by a recently released convicted criminal who rushed onto the stage during the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity finale in Gdańsk. The mayor suffered severe cardiac and abdominal injuries. Doctors reanimated Adamowicz on the spot and then transported him to the Medical University of Gdańsk hospital, where he underwent five hours of surgery. (PAP)
