The presence of a US military base in Poland will strengthen security in the entire region, President Andrzej Duda’s top aide Krzysztof Szczerski told the Baltic News Service agency in an interview published on Monday.
The head of President’s Office said that methods and tools to achieve an increased presence of US land forces in Poland are currently being discussed, as this is not only a matter of building a base.
Krzysztof Szczerski pointed out that the current situation in Washington is not favourable and may affect the timing of the adoption of the decision. He noted that discussions are also needed within NATO, as regards the presence of the US military base in Poland. In his opinion, spring will be a good time to hold specific debates on the subject.
Asked whether a greater presence of US troops in Poland will not be a pretext for Russia to enter its troops in Belarus, Krzysztof Szczerski noted that everything that has been done in this respect, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, is a direct response to aggressive actions of the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The presidential aide visited Lithuania last week to attend the “Snow Meeting”, an informal security policy meeting. (PAP)
