Green Week: facts on agriculture in Germany

WIESBADEN – A growing number of agricultural holdings in Germany are converting to organic egg production. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) to mark the Green Week, which will be held from 18 to 27 January 2019. The number of laying hen places in organic production has nearly tripled in the last 10 years. It rose from just under 1.8 million on the reference date of 1 December 2007 to roughly 5.1 million in 2017. There was also a significant proportionate increase: while laying hen places in organic production accounted for just 4.5% of the total in 2007, this proportion increased to 10.4% by 2017.
