Consumer prices in December 2018: 1.7% rise on December 2017 expected

Compared with November 2018, consumer prices are expected to increase by 0.1%. Based on the results available so far, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that, on an annual average, the inflation rate is expected to stand at 1.9% in 2018.

In December 2018, the harmonised index of consumer prices for Germany, which is calculated for European purposes, is expected to increase by 1.7% year on year. Compared with November 2018, it is expected to be up 0.3%. On an annual average, the harmonised index of consumer prices is expected to increase by 1.9% in 2018 compared with 2017.The final results for December 2018 will be released on 16 January 2019.

Turn of the year: domestic sales of sparkling wine down 5.2% in 2017 on the previous year

WIESBADEN – Happy New Year! This usually involves raising a glass of sparkling wine. In 2017, 286 million litres of sparkling wine were sold in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this corresponds to roughly 381 million standard 0.75 litre bottles. Compared with the previous year, the sales of sparkling wine were down by 15.6 million litres, or 5.2%.

New orders in main construction industry in October 2018: +1.0% seasonally adjusted on the previous month

Enlarge picture WIESBADEN – The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that price-adjusted new orders in the main construction industry in October 2018 increased a seasonally and working-day adjusted 1.0% on September 2018.
In building construction and civil and underground engineering, in establishments of enterprises with 20 or more persons, new orders increased by 21.0% in nominal terms compared with the corresponding month of the previous year.

Pig population in Germany decreases

WIESBADEN – On reference date 3 November 2018, roughly 26.4 million pigs were kept in Germany. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of pigs was down by roughly 457,000, or 1.7%, on May 2018. In November 2017, the number of pigs had been higher by roughly 1.1 million, or 4.1%.

Enlarge picture WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the index of import prices increased by 3.1% in November 2018 compared with the corresponding month of the preceding year. In October and in September 2018 the annual rates of change were +4.8% and +4.4%, respectively. From October 2018 to November 2018 the index fell by 1.0%.
The index of import prices, excluding crude oil and mineral oil products, increased by 2.3% compared with the level of a year earlier.
The index of export prices increased by 1.7% in November 2018 compared with the corresponding month of the preceding year. In October and in September 2018 the annual rates of change were +2.0% and +1.9%, respectively. From October 2018 to November 2018 the export price index slightly fell by 0.1%.

Year-on-year decline of 2.3% in public debt at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2018

WIESBADEN – The debt owed by the overall public budget (Federation, Länder, municipalities/associations of municipalities and social security funds including all extra budgets) to the non-public sector amounted to 1,929.8 billion euros at the end of the third quarter of 2018. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a decrease in debt of 2.3%, or 45.0 billion euros, compared with the end of the third quarter of 2017. Compared with the second quarter of 2018, public debt was down by 0.2% or 4.8 billion euros. The non-public sector comprises credit institutions, the remaining domestic sector (for instance private businesses) and the remaining non-domestic sector.

Teachers’ retirements down again in 2017

Enlarge picture WIESBADEN – Roughly 24,400 teachers (public officials) went into retirement in 2017. This was a decrease of 1,100 retirements compared with a year earlier (-4.2%). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was the second consecutive decrease following 27,900 retirements in 2015, which had been the highest number since statistical coverage started in 1993.

Sowing for 2019 harvest: more winter grain

WIESBADEN – In autumn 2018, agricultural holdings in Germany sowed winter grain on 5.43 million hectares of land for the next harvest of 2019. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the areas cultivated with winter grain for the 2019 harvest are by 438,800 hectares larger (+9%) than the relevant areas in 2018. Winter grain comprises winter wheat, winter barley, rye and maslin as well as triticale (wheat-rye hybrid).
